🌞 Beating the Summer Heat: Tips for Seniors in Homecare

As temperatures rise, so do the risks of heat-related illnesses—especially for older adults. We care deeply about the health and safety of the individuals we serve, and that includes staying cool and comfortable all summer long.

Here are some essential tips for seniors and caregivers to help beat the heat:

1. Stay Hydrated

Older adults may not always feel thirsty, but staying hydrated is crucial. Aim for at least 6–8 glasses of water daily. Keep a water bottle nearby and infuse water with lemon, cucumber, or mint to make it more enjoyable.

2. Dress for the Weather

Light-colored, loose-fitting clothing made from breathable fabrics like cotton can help keep body temperature regulated. Don’t forget wide-brimmed hats and UV-protection sunglasses when going outside.

3. Limit Sun Exposure

Try to stay indoors during peak heat hours—usually between 10 AM and 4 PM. If outdoor activities are planned, early mornings or late evenings are best.

4. Use Fans and Air Conditioning Wisely

Keep fans running to circulate air and ensure the air conditioning is working efficiently. If AC is unavailable, consider visiting local senior centers, libraries, or cooling centers.

5. Cool Showers and Washcloths

A quick cool shower or placing a damp washcloth on the neck, wrists, or forehead can help regulate body temperature instantly.

6. Eat Light

Opt for smaller, cooler meals—like fresh fruits, salads, and cold sandwiches. Avoid heavy, hot meals that can raise internal body temperature.

7. Know the Warning Signs of Heat Stroke

Symptoms include dizziness, nausea, rapid pulse, confusion, and headache. If you or a loved one experiences these, seek medical attention immediately.
